Practice Relating to Rule 131. Treatment of Displaced Persons
In 2014, in a statement during the general debate of the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Uruguay stated:
Uruguay views with grave concern the situation in Syria, Libya, Gaza and Iraq and reiterates that any solution to the conflict must be a negotiated one.
In the light of the growing number of refugees and displaced persons overflowing Syria’s neighbouring countries, as well as the lack of international funds to tackle this humanitarian crisis, Uruguay has joined the list of countries receiving Syrian refugees in their territories. Together with UNHCR, Uruguay is working on the resettlement of Syrian refugee families in Lebanon. Our priority is to achieve their rapid integration into society through access to housing, education and work.
