Practice Relating to Rule 70. Weapons of a Nature to Cause Superfluous Injury or Unnecessary Suffering
In its oral pleadings before the ICJ in the
Nuclear Weapons case in 1995, Zimbabwe stated that it fully shared the analysis by other States that “the threat or use of nuclear weapons violates the principles of humanitarian law prohibiting the use of weapons or methods of warfare that create unnecessary suffering”.
According to the Report on the Practice of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe “does not employ any weapons meant to cause unnecessary suffering or superfluous injury, e.g. exploding bullets, incendiary weapons, booby-traps, etc.”.
