This Act implements the Ottawa treaty banning anti-personnel mines. It makes it an offence to use, develop, produce, otherwise acquire, stockpile, retain or transfer such mines. If a fact-finding mission to Australia is authorized under the Ottawa treaty, the minister responsible for the treaty's implementation shall appoint each member of the mission as an inspector. Inspectors may enter premises and exercise powers of inspection for the purpose of determining whether the provisions of the treaty have been complied with. The minister responsible for implementing the treaty can require that information relevant to the reporting obligations set down in the treaty be provided.
